Fatal Peach Orchard Road Crash Involving Sheriff’s Patrol Car Under Investigation

Georgia State Patrol investigations into a fatal Peach Orchard Road crash that occurred earlier this month are underway. A man in a wheelchair was killed as a result of this accident that occurred on the 3700 block of Peach Orchard Road. The investigations are handled by the Georgia State Patrol because a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was involved in the accident.

The victim of the Peach Orchard Road crash has been identified as Gregory Lynn Baker, aged 59. He was struck by a vehicle traveling Southbound while he was crossing Peach Orchard. Baker was thrown in the Northbound lanes where the County Sheriff’s Office patrol car struck him. Baker died at the scene at 10:30 p.m.

An autopsy has been scheduled. The County Office said that outside agencies should investigate any incident that causes a fatality due to the direct or indirect involvement of employees as it eliminates biases.

Two days before Baker’s death, two other pedestrians were struck in CSRA counties. Dispatchers responded to a call about a pedestrian who was struck. at 8:39 a.m. Richmond County deputies responded. The incident occurred at the 1900 block of Olive Road. The pedestrian was a girl, aged 12. She was hit while crossing the street to get onto a school bus. A van struck the student and she was taken to a hospital as she sustained minor injuries.

Another investigation is under process by the Columbia County deputies after a pedestrian was struck by a car around 6:37 a.m. on Friday at Springs Lake Drive and Columbia Road.
